Grammar Point: Formal vs. Informal (du vs. Sie)
German has two ways of saying "you":
- du — informal, used with friends, family, children, and people your own age/peers.
- Sie — formal (always capitalized), used with strangers, older people, teachers, bosses, or anyone you don't know well.
This affects your greetings and verb forms:
| Situation | Greeting used |
|---|---|
| Informal (du) | Hallo!, Wie geht's?, Tschüss! |
| Formal (Sie) | Guten Tag, Wie geht es Ihnen?, Auf Wiedersehen |
Rule of thumb: with strangers or in professional settings, default to Sie and formal greetings. With friends and people your age, du and casual greetings are fine.
Time-of-day greetings (Guten Morgen, Guten Tag, Guten Abend) work in both formal and informal situations — they're neutral, just choose based on the time of day.
