A1.2 — Lesson 10: Cumulative Review

Intro

This lesson reviews all of A1.2: family, daily routine, telling time, food & drink, shopping, modal verbs, separable verbs, accusative case, and negation. Try the exercises before checking the answer key.

Vocabulary Recap

die Familie, mein/dein/sein/ihr, aufstehen, frühstücken, um/am/im, Viertel, halb, das Brot, der Apfel, das Geschäft, möchten, kosten, können, müssen, wollen, einkaufen, anrufen, ankommen, den/die/das (accusative), mich/dich/ihn, nicht, kein.

Grammar Recap

  • Possessive articles agree with gender like ein: mein/meine, dein/deine...
  • Time: um + clock time, am + day/part of day, im + month/season
  • halb drei = 2:30 (points to the coming hour, not the last one)
  • Plurals: no single rule — learn with the noun; all plurals take die
  • möchten = polite "would like," modal-verb pattern
  • Modal verbs (können/müssen/wollen/dürfen/sollen) push the infinitive to the end of the clause
  • Separable verbs: prefix goes to the end in present tense; stays attached after a modal verb
  • Accusative: only masculine changes (der→den, ein→einen); pronouns: mich, dich, ihn, sie, es, uns, euch, sie/Sie
  • kein negates a noun (ein/no article); nicht negates everything else

Exercises

  1. Fill in the blank: ___ (my) Schwester wohnt in Hamburg.
  2. Translate colloquially: 5:30 (remember the halb rule)
  3. Fill in the blank: Ich ___ (möchten) einen Tee, bitte.
  4. Fill in the blank: Ich ___ (müssen) heute ___ (aufstehen) früh. (split the separable verb correctly)
  5. Fill in the accusative article: Ich kaufe ___ Apfel. (der Apfel)
  6. Replace with a pronoun: Ich sehe den Hund. → Ich sehe ___.
  7. Negate with kein: Ich habe Zeit.
  8. Negate with nicht: Das ist teuer.
  9. Translate to English: Ich stehe um sieben auf, dusche, und dann frühstücke ich.
  10. Write 3 sentences about your day: one with a time preposition, one with a modal verb, one with negation.

Ich muss viel arbeiten, aber am Mittag kaufe ich manchmal im Supermarkt ein: Äpfel, Brot und Gemüse. Ich mag kein Fleisch, also esse ich oft Fisch. Am Abend sehe ich fern oder ich rufe meine Schwester an. Ich habe keine Kinder, aber ich habe zwei Katzen. Um elf Uhr gehe ich schlafen.
