A1.2 — Lesson 9: Negation (nicht / kein)
Intro
To say "not" or "no" in German, you need to choose between nicht and kein depending on what you're negating — and get the word order right. This lesson clears up both.
Core Vocabulary

|---|---|---|
| nicht | not | Ich verstehe das nicht. |
| kein / keine | no / not a | Ich habe kein Auto. |
| noch nicht | not yet | Ich bin noch nicht fertig. |
| nie | never | Ich rauche nie. |
| gar nicht | not at all | Das gefällt mir gar nicht. |
| leider | unfortunately | Leider habe ich keine Zeit. |
| verstehen | to understand | Ich verstehe dich nicht. |
| gefallen | to please/like | Das gefällt mir. |
| fertig | finished / ready | Bist du fertig? |
Grammar Point: nicht vs. kein
kein/keine negates a noun that would otherwise take ein/eine (or no article at all, for uncountables/plurals). It declines just like ein (masc. den→keinen in accusative, etc.):
Ich habe ein Auto. → Ich habe kein Auto. (I don't have a car.) Ich habe einen Bruder. → Ich habe keinen Bruder. (accusative masc.) Ich esse Fleisch. → Ich esse kein Fleisch. (no article noun → kein) Ich habe Kinder. → Ich habe keine Kinder. (plural → keine)
nicht negates everything else: verbs, adjectives, adverbs, and nouns that already have a definite article (der/die/das) or possessive.
Ich verstehe das nicht. (verb negation) Das ist nicht teuer. (adjective negation) Ich sehe den Mann nicht. (definite noun → nicht, not kein)
Position of nicht:
- To negate the whole sentence / a verb, nicht usually goes near the end of the clause (but
before a second verb part, prepositional phrase, or adjective):
Ich arbeite heute nicht. Ich komme nicht mit. (before the separable prefix)
- To negate one specific word (like an adjective), nicht goes right before that word:
Das ist nicht groß.
Quick rule of thumb: noun with ein/no article → kein; everything else (verbs, adjectives, definite nouns) → nicht.
