Grammar Point: Accusative Case (Direct Objects)

The accusative case marks the direct object — the thing directly affected by the verb's action. Only the masculine article changes; feminine, neuter, and plural stay the same as nominative:

GenderNominative (subject)Accusative (direct object)
masculineder / einden / einen
femininedie / einedie / eine (no change)
neuterdas / eindas / ein (no change)
pluraldiedie (no change)

Examples:

Nominative: Der Hund ist sĂŒĂŸ. (The dog is cute — subject) Accusative: Ich sehe den Hund. (I see the dog — direct object) Ich kaufe einen Apfel. (masc., ein → einen) Ich kaufe eine Banane. (fem., no change) Ich kaufe ein Brot. (neut., no change)

Accusative personal pronouns (replacing a direct object noun):

Nominativeichduersieeswirihrsie/Sie
Accusativemichdichihnsieesunseuchsie/Sie

Example: Ich sehe dich. (I see you.) / Er ruft mich an. (He's calling me.)

Common accusative-taking verbs: haben, kaufen, sehen, brauchen, mögen, suchen, finden, lesen, trinken — most transitive verbs take a direct object in the accusative.
