Grammar Point: Separable Verbs (Trennbare Verben)

Separable verbs are made of a prefix (like auf-, ein-, an-, mit-, ab-, zu-, vor-) attached to a base verb (stehen, kaufen, rufen, kommen...). In the infinitive, they look like one word: aufstehen, einkaufen, anrufen.

In a main clause with present tense, the rule is: conjugate the base verb normally in position 2, and send the prefix all the way to the end of the clause:

aufstehen → Ich stehe um sieben auf. (I get up at seven.) einkaufen → Wir kaufen samstags ein. (We shop on Saturdays.) anrufen → Er ruft seine Mutter an. (He calls his mother.)

This creates the same "bracket" structure you saw with modal verbs in Lesson 6 — something in position 2, something else pushed to the end.

With a modal verb, the separable verb stays together as one infinitive at the end (no splitting!):

Ich muss frĂŒh aufstehen. (I have to get up early — not "auf...stehen") Ich möchte dich anrufen. (I'd like to call you.)

Common separable prefixes: auf-, an-, ab-, ein-, aus-, mit-, vor-, zu-, weg-, zurĂŒck-
