A1.2 — Lesson 6: Modal Verbs
Intro
Modal verbs express ability, necessity, permission, desire, and obligation — can, must, want, may, should. They're extremely common and follow a special sentence structure that pushes the main verb to the very end of the clause.
Core Vocabulary
| German | English | Example sentence |
|---|---|---|
| können | can / to be able to | Ich kann gut kochen. |
| müssen | must / to have to | Ich muss jetzt arbeiten. |
| wollen | to want to | Ich will nach Hause gehen. |
| dürfen | may / to be allowed to | Darf ich hier rauchen? |
| sollen | should / to be supposed to | Du sollst mehr schlafen. |
| mögen | to like | Ich mag Schokolade. |
Grammar Point: Modal Verb Conjugation + the "Verb Bracket"
Modal verbs are irregular in the singular (ich/du/er) — they change their stem vowel and drop the usual endings:
| Pronoun | können | müssen | wollen | dürfen | sollen | mögen |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ich | kann | muss | will | darf | soll | mag |
| du | kannst | musst | willst | darfst | sollst | magst |
| er/sie/es | kann | muss | will | darf | soll | mag |
| wir | können | müssen | wollen | dürfen | sollen | mögen |
| ihr | könnt | müsst | wollt | dürft | sollt | mögt |
| sie/Sie | können | müssen | wollen | dürfen | sollen | mögen |
Sentence structure — the "verb bracket" (Satzklammer): the conjugated modal verb sits in position 2 (like any verb), and the main verb goes to the infinitive, pushed all the way to the end of the clause:
Ich kann gut kochen. (I can cook well.) Du musst jetzt gehen. (You have to go now.) Wir wollen einen Film sehen. (We want to watch a movie.)
This "bracket" (modal in position 2, infinitive at the end) is one of the most important structural patterns in German and reappears with other verb combinations later (Perfekt, separable verbs, subordinate clauses).
Note: mögen is usually used without an infinitive, directly with a noun: Ich mag Schokolade. (I like chocolate.)
