Intro

This lesson equips you for shops and markets: asking prices, sizes, and politely saying what you'd like using möchten — the polite form of "want" that every German learner needs early on.

Grammar Point: möchten + Prices with Numbers

möchten ("would like") is the polite form used for requests — much softer than wollen (want). It's a modal verb, so the conjugated form pairs with an infinitive at the end of the sentence (or can stand alone with a noun):

Examples:

Ich möchte einen Apfel. (I'd like an apple.) Ich möchte ein Brot kaufen. (I'd like to buy a bread.) Möchten Sie noch etwas? (Would you like anything else?)

Prices: combine numbers (Lesson 3, A1.1) with Euro and kosten:

Das kostet fĂŒnf Euro. (That costs five euros.) Wie viel kostet das Brot? — Es kostet zwei Euro fĂŒnfzig. (How much does the bread cost? — It costs two euros fifty.)
