A2.1 â Lesson 6: The Dative Case
Intro
You already know the accusative case for direct objects. Now meet the dative case, used for indirect objects â the person or thing that receives the action. This is a big grammar milestone: German now has three cases active (nominative, accusative, dative).
Core Vocabulary
| German | English | Example sentence |
|---|---|---|
| helfen | to help | Ich helfe dir. |
| gefallen | to please/like | Das Buch gefÀllt mir. |
| gehören | to belong to | Das Auto gehört ihm. |
| danken | to thank | Ich danke dir. |
| geben | to give | Ich gebe dir das Buch. |
| zeigen | to show | Sie zeigt mir die Stadt. |
| schenken | to give (a gift) | Er schenkt ihr Blumen. |
| schreiben | to write (to someone) | Ich schreibe meiner Mutter. |
| antworten | to answer | Ich antworte dem Lehrer. |
| glauben | to believe (someone) | Ich glaube dir. |
Grammar Point: The Dative Case
The dative marks the indirect object â usually the person receiving or benefiting from an action ("to/for whom"). Definite articles change like this:
| Gender | Nominative | Dative |
|---|---|---|
| masculine | der | dem |
| feminine | die | der |
| neuter | das | dem |
| plural | die | den (+ n on the noun: den Kindern) |
Ich gebe dem Mann das Buch. (I give the man the book.) Ich helfe der Frau. (I help the woman.) Ich zeige dem Kind den Park. (I show the child the park.) Ich danke den Eltern. (I thank the parents â plural noun gets -n: Eltern â Eltern, already ends in -n, but e.g. Kinder â Kindern)
Dative personal pronouns:
| Nominative | Dative |
|---|---|
| ich | mir |
| du | dir |
| er | ihm |
| sie | ihr |
| es | ihm |
| wir | uns |
| ihr | euch |
| sie/Sie | ihnen/Ihnen |
Some verbs always take the dative object even though they look like they should take accusative: helfen, gefallen, gehören, danken, antworten, glauben.
Ich helfe dir. (NOT "ich helfe dich") Das gefĂ€llt mir. (I like that â literally "that pleases me")
Sentences with both a direct (accusative) and indirect (dative) object put dative before accusative when both are nouns, but pronoun before noun when mixed:
Ich gebe dem Mann (dative) das Buch (accusative). Ich gebe es (accusative pronoun) ihm (dative pronoun).
