B1.1 — Lesson 5: Expressing Opinions & Comparatives in Argument

Intro

B1 is where you start building arguments and giving nuanced opinions, not just describing facts. This lesson gives you phrases for stating and softening opinions, plus two comparative structures used heavily in discussion and argument: genauso... wie (just as... as) and je... desto (the more... the more).

Grammar Point: Comparative Structures for Argument

1. genauso... wie (just as... as) — equal comparison:

Das neue Modell ist genauso teuer wie das alte. (The new model is just as expensive as the old one.) Sie arbeitet genauso viel wie ihr Kollege. (She works just as much as her colleague.)

Related: nicht so... wie (not as... as) for negative equal comparison:

Diese Lösung ist nicht so gut wie die andere.

2. je... desto (the... the...) — correlative comparison showing cause and effect. Both parts use comparative adjectives, and both clauses have verb-final-ish word order: the je-clause is a subordinate clause (verb at the end), and the desto-clause has the verb right after desto (inverted word order):

Je mehr man übt, desto besser wird man. (The more you practice, the better you get.)

Je früher wir anfangen, desto schneller sind wir fertig. (The earlier we start, the faster we'll be done.)

Opinion phrases are typically followed by a dass-clause (verb-final) or stand alone before a main clause:

Ich finde, dass die Idee gut ist. Meiner Meinung nach ist die Idee gut. (no dass — main clause word order, verb second)
