B1.1 — Lesson 4: Indirect Questions
Intro
Instead of asking directly ("Where does he live?"), you often need to embed a question inside another sentence: "I don't know where he lives." German handles these indirect (embedded) questions with a specific word order — the same verb-final pattern you already know from weil and dass clauses.

Grammar Point: Embedded Questions with ob and W-words
Yes/No questions become indirect questions with ob (whether/if):
Direct: Kommt er heute? Indirect: Ich weiß nicht, ob er heute kommt.
W-questions keep their question word, which now functions as a subordinating conjunction:
Direct: Wo wohnt er? Indirect: Ich weiß nicht, wo er wohnt.
Direct: Warum ist sie so müde? Indirect: Ich frage mich, warum sie so müde ist.
In both cases, the conjugated verb moves to the end of the embedded clause — exactly like weil, dass, and wenn clauses you already know. The embedded question is preceded by a comma.
