A1.1 — Lesson 6: Articles (der/die/das)

Intro

Every German noun has a grammatical gender — masculine, feminine, or neuter — shown by its article (der, die, das). This lesson introduces the three genders in the nominative case (the basic "subject" form) and the plural article, plus some patterns to help you guess gender.

Core Vocabulary

Grammar Point: Der / Die / Das (Nominative Case)

German nouns are always capitalized, and each takes one of three definite articles:

GenderArticleExample
masculinederder Mann, der Tisch, der Hund
femininediedie Frau, die Lampe, die Katze
neuterdasdas Kind, das Buch, das Auto
plural (all genders)diedie Männer, die Frauen, die Kinder

There's no foolproof rule for gender, but some patterns help:

  • Words ending in -e are often feminine: die Lampe, die Schule (not always — der Junge is an exception)
  • Words ending in -chen or -lein are always neuter: das Mädchen, das Kätzchen
  • Male people/animals are usually masculine, female usually feminine: der Mann, die Frau
  • Nouns ending in -ung, -heit, -keit, -tion are always feminine: die Zeitung, die Freiheit

Best practice: always learn a noun together with its article — don't memorize Tisch, memorize der Tisch.

The indefinite article ("a/an") also changes by gender: ein Mann (masc.), eine Frau (fem.), ein Kind (neut.) — no gender distinction for "a" between masculine and neuter here.

Das ist mein Zimmer. Der Tisch ist neu, aber der Stuhl ist alt. Die Lampe auf dem Tisch ist gelb. Das Buch da ist sehr interessant. Ich habe auch einen Hund — der Hund heißt Bruno. Meine Katze heißt Mimi; die Katze schläft immer auf dem Stuhl.

(Translation: This is my room. The table is new, but the chair is old. The lamp on the table is yellow. That book is very interesting. I also have a dog — the dog is named Bruno. My cat is named Mimi; the cat always sleeps on the chair.)
