A1.2 — Lesson 2: Daily Routine

Intro

This lesson gives you the vocabulary to describe a normal day — waking up, eating, working, sleeping — and shows you how to say when something happens using time prepositions. You'll also get a first glimpse of separable verbs (full grammar in Lesson 7).

Grammar Point: Time Expressions with Prepositions

To say when something happens, German uses different prepositions depending on the type of time word:

  • um + clock time: um sieben Uhr (at seven o'clock), um Mitternacht (at midnight)
  • am (an + dem) + day or part of day: am Morgen (in the morning), am Montag (on Monday) — exception: in der Nacht (at night) uses in der, not am
  • im (in + dem) + month or season: im Januar (in January), im Winter (in winter)

Examples:

Ich stehe um sechs Uhr auf. (I get up at six o'clock.) Am Morgen trinke ich Kaffee. (In the morning I drink coffee.) Im Sommer arbeite ich weniger. (In summer I work less.)

A first look at separable verbs: notice aufstehen (auf + stehen) — in a sentence, the prefix auf jumps to the very end: Ich stehe um sieben Uhr auf. This "verb splitting" pattern applies to many everyday verbs (fernsehen, einkaufen, anrufen...). We'll cover the full rule in Lesson 7 — for now, just notice the pattern in the vocabulary above.

Ich komme um sechs Uhr abends nach Hause. Und du? Ben: Ich stehe später auf, um acht. Am Abend sehe ich gern fern und ich gehe um Mitternacht schlafen. Amelie: Das ist spät!

(Translation: Ben: When do you usually get up? Amelie: I get up at six and shower. Then I have breakfast at seven. Ben: And when do you go to work? Amelie: At eight. I come home at six in the evening. And you? Ben: I get up later, at eight. In the evening I like to watch TV and I go to sleep at midnight. Amelie: That's late!)
