A1.2 — Lesson 3: Telling Time

Intro

You've been using clock times already (um sieben Uhr). Now let's learn to read and say any time on the clock — both the precise "official" way (used for schedules, TV, trains) and the relaxed, colloquial way people use in daily conversation.

Grammar Point: Official vs. Colloquial Time

Official time (24-hour clock, used for schedules): say the hour, then "Uhr," then the minutes.

14:00 → vierzehn Uhr 14:15 → vierzehn Uhr fĂŒnfzehn 14:30 → vierzehn Uhr dreißig 14:45 → vierzehn Uhr fĂŒnfundvierzig

Colloquial time (12-hour, everyday speech): uses nach (past), vor (to), Viertel (quarter), and halb (half) — but note the German trick with halb: it points to the upcoming hour, not the previous one, unlike English "half past."

2:00 → zwei Uhr 2:10 → zehn nach zwei (ten past two) 2:15 → Viertel nach zwei (quarter past two) 2:30 → halb drei (literally "half three" = halfway to three, i.e. 2:30!) 2:45 → Viertel vor drei (quarter to three) 2:50 → zehn vor drei (ten to three)

This halb rule trips up almost every learner — German counts toward the next hour, English counts from the last one. Halb drei is 2:30, never 3:30.
