A2.1 — Lesson 3: Directions

Intro

Now that you know city vocabulary, let's learn to ask for and give directions — and pick up the imperative mood, the verb form used for instructions and commands.

Grammar Point: The Imperative Mood

The imperative is used for commands and instructions — perfect for directions. It has three forms:

du-form: drop -st from the du conjugation, no pronoun:

du gehst → Geh! | du biegst ab → Bieg ab!

ihr-form: same as the ihr conjugation, just drop the pronoun:

ihr geht → Geht! | ihr biegt ab → Biegt ab!

Sie-form (formal, most common for directions to strangers): verb + Sie, verb stays first:

Sie gehen → Gehen Sie! | Sie biegen ab → Biegen Sie ab!

With separable verbs (like abbiegen), the prefix goes to the end, same as in present tense:

Biegen Sie an der Ampel rechts ab.

Note: sein is irregular in the imperative: du → Sei ruhig!, ihr → Seid ruhig!, Sie → Seien Sie ruhig!
