Grammar Point: Comparative & Superlative Forms

Comparative (more X / -er): add -er to the adjective, often with an umlaut on the vowel:

schnell → schneller (faster) groß → größer (bigger) alt → älter (older)

Used with als (than): Der Zug ist schneller als das Auto. (The train is faster than the car)

Superlative (the most X): use am ...-sten:

schnell → am schnellsten (fastest) groß → am größten (biggest) alt → am ältesten (oldest)

Adjectives ending in -d, -t, -s, -z, -sch add an extra -e before -sten: am kürzesten, am ältesten.

Irregular forms (memorize these):

vielmehram meisten

hochhöheram höchsten

Examples:

Dieses Café ist besser als das andere. (This café is better than the other) Ich reise am liebsten im Sommer. (I like traveling best in the summer) Das ist der teuerste Laden in der Stadt. (attributive form before a noun: -ste + adjective ending)
