A2.2 — Lesson 5: Subordinate Clauses (weil, dass, wenn)

Intro

So far your sentences have mostly been simple, single-clause statements. This lesson introduces subordinate clauses — a critical structure for giving reasons, reporting facts, and describing conditions — and the key word-order change they trigger: the verb moves to the end.

Core Vocabulary

GermanEnglishExample sentence
weilbecauseIch bin müde, weil ich viel gearbeitet habe.
dassthatIch glaube, dass er recht hat.
wennif / wheneverWenn es regnet, bleibe ich zu Hause.
dennbecause (coordinating)Ich bleibe zu Hause, denn es regnet.
glaubento believeIch glaube, dass es gut ist.
hoffento hopeIch hoffe, dass du kommst.
denkento thinkIch denke, dass es stimmt.
der GrundreasonWas ist der Grund?

Grammar Point: Verb-Final Word Order

In a subordinate clause introduced by weil, dass, or wenn, the conjugated verb moves to the very end of the clause:

Main clause word order: Ich bin müde. Subordinate clause: ..., weil ich müde bin.

Full examples:

Ich bleibe zu Hause, weil es regnet. (I'm staying home because it's raining) Ich glaube, dass er Recht hat. (I believe that he's right) Wenn es regnet, bleibe ich zu Hause. (If it rains, I stay home)

If the sentence starts with the subordinate clause (as with wenn above), the main clause verb comes immediately after the comma, in second position overall — this is called "verb-verb" order:

Wenn es regnet, bleibe ich zu Hause. (verb1 ... , verb2 + subject)

weil vs. denn: both mean "because," but denn is a coordinating conjunction — it does not change word order (verb stays in position 2):

Ich bleibe zu Hause, denn es regnet. (verb stays normal) Ich bleibe zu Hause, weil es regnet. (verb moves to end)

Exercises

  1. Combine with weil: Ich bin müde. + Ich habe viel gearbeitet.
  2. Combine with dass: Ich glaube. + Er kommt heute.
  3. Combine with wenn: Es regnet. + Ich bleibe zu Hause. (start with wenn)
  4. Fill in the blank word order: Ich hoffe, dass du morgen ___ (kommen).
  5. Multiple choice: which conjunction does NOT change word order? a) weil b) dass c) denn
  6. Translate to German: "I think that German is difficult." (use denken + dass)
  7. Translate to English: Wenn du Zeit hast, können wir uns treffen.
  8. Rewrite using denn instead of weil, adjusting word order: Ich lerne Deutsch, weil ich nach Berlin ziehe.
  9. Fill in the blank: Der Grund, ___ (warum/dass) ich lerne, ist mein neuer Job.
