B1.2 â Lesson 4: Genitive Case
Intro
The genitive case shows possession or a close relationship between two nouns â English "of the..." or "'s". It's the least common case in spoken German (often replaced by von + dative), but it's still expected in written German, formal contexts, and after certain prepositions â so B1 requires you to recognize and use it.
Core Vocabulary

Grammar Point: Genitive Case Formation
The genitive marks "whose" or "of what" â it attaches to the noun that possesses something, and that noun typically comes after the thing possessed:
das Auto des Mannes (the man's car / the car of the man) die Tasche der Frau (the woman's bag)
Genitive articles and noun endings:
| Gender | Article | Noun ending | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| masculine | des | + -s or -es | des Mannes, des Autos |
| feminine | der | (no change) | der Frau |
| neuter | des | + -s or -es | des Kindes, des Hauses |
| plural | der | (no change) | der Kinder |
Masculine and neuter nouns add -s (most nouns) or -es (nouns ending in -s, -Ă, -z, -sch, or one-syllable words often prefer -es): des Mannes, des Autos, des Hauses.
Genitive prepositions â always trigger genitive on the following noun:
wegen des Wetters (because of the weather) trotz des Regens (despite the rain) wĂ€hrend der Ferien (during the holidays) innerhalb/âauĂerhalb der Stadt (within/outside the city)
Note on modern usage: in everyday spoken German, many people replace genitive with von + dative, especially with wegen: wegen dem Wetter (colloquial) instead of wegen des Wetters (correct written form). For B1, learn the correct genitive form â it's expected in writing and exams.
